Spina Bifida Association Announces New Folic Acid Education Program

The Spina Bifida Association of Arizona (SBAAZ) is excited to announce a new program, in an effort to reduce the number of neural tube defects (NTD) in the birth outcomes of Maricopa County Latinas – the program is called the Folic Acid Education and Culinary Training Program – and will educate High School Latinas on the importance of folic acid consumption and culinary training related to folate rich meal preparation.

Culinary training will be provided by a local celebrity such as the Univision Chef, Teledia daytime personality and Next Food Network Star semi-finalist Cristina Nevarez as well as Valley student chefs.  After completing the course, participants will have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills by preparing their own folate-rich recipes which will be published in a cookbook.  They will also have the opportunity to order free Folic Acid 400 mcg vitamins from the March of Dimes. Currently, the East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) and the Art Institute of Phoenix are participating as hosts of the program, with the first EVIT class beginning on Thursday, March 25 at 5 p.m.
